The problem
Teaching "Nutrition and Household" in secondary school is characterised by traditional recipes and conventional tastes. The children like to eat what they know. There is often a lack of openness and understanding of vegetarian or vegan cuisine. The choice of recipes is usually left to the teacher and also corresponds to the teacher's ideas. Vegan cuisine is also not explicitly integrated into the curriculum. As a result, students not only miss out on new flavours, but also on different preparation methods and the importance of nutrition and food for the world and the climate.
The solution we used
Incorporating vegan recipes into the "Nutrition and Household" lessons and thus creating opportunities for discussion about meat consumption, the dairy industry and the climate
Implementation
As a teacher with a plant-based diet, I arouse interest among the students, and they often seek out the dialogue. When I found myself in the position of teaching "nutrition and household" for four weeks, I took this as an opportunity to cook exclusively vegan recipes.
In this example, just before Christmas, it was vegan Christmas biscuits - which were well received by the pupils and their parents/guardians. (vegan cinnamon stars recipe from the blog Bianca Zapatka)
